Senora Gerber y Jaime:
Feliz Año Nuevo! Gracias por el saludo de Navidad. We have been recommending Eco Paraiso to our friends, relatives and business associates. When they visit your website they all understand why we love Xixim so much. We hope to return to Celestun again this year but we have not set a date yet. This will be our fourth visit with you. We hope you are both well. Cheers,

Hello to everyone,
We have returned safely to our house in Maine and we miss Eco Paraiso a lot! It was a highlight of our time in Mexico. Thank you again. Would you please be so kind as to send us the contact information for the Casa Hogar that came to sing on 24 December in the evening? We would like to send them a contribution. Gracias,

Dear Mr. Solis:
Dominik and I would like to thank you for everything you have done to ensure that we would enjoy our stay in Celestun despite the mistake with our reservation. We enjoyed our suite at Playa Maya but were always happy to come to Eco Paraiso for meals and activities. The excursions were very good and your staff was always helpful. Of course we remain disappointed that we were not able to actually stay at Eco Paraiso, but we hope we'll be able to come back. You certainly did your best to remedy a bad situation and we are grateful for that.
Happy New Year to you and your staff.

To all,
Thank you for the most wonderful stay and vacation. I enjoyed my stay in the peaceful tranquility of Eco Paraiso, and it was my pleasure to meet you. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with you and your families at the Christmas party. I am home safely now, but I truly hope to be back soon. Feliz Navidad y Feliz Ano Nuevo.

Conocí el invernadero “in spe”. Tengo también recomendaciones y acciones. Nothing more!! It was very relaxing. I will come again.

Dear Eco Paraiso,
My husband and I had a wonderful visit to Celestun and Eco Paraiso earlier this summer. And we really enjoyed our tours with your tour guide, Alex. My husband especially enjoyed his birdwatching skills. We enjoyed our visit to Mexico so much that I am trying to plan another visit to see some of the areas that we missed -- primarily Sian Ka'an reserve. We were hoping to hire a birdwatching guide for our visit to the reserve, and we were hoping that perhaps Alex would be able to recommend someone. Are you able to either pass this question along to him -- or are you able to provide me with an email address for Alex? Thank you very much for your help -- and thanks again for a wonderful vacation at Eco Paraiso!

Estimado Sergio,

Ola Mr. Garza!
You asked us to let you know when we arrived home. We arrived home this morning at 1:00 A.M.. We had a very nice time in Mexico and the Eco Paraiso was the nicest place that we stayed during our time there. The peacefulness and beauty of your location as well as the accommodations and people make it very unique and special. The food that was served to us was the best of all the places on our trip! We want to highly recommend Migel for his service to us. Everyone was very kind and helpful. We look forward to returning and staying for a longer time. Thank you for your bread recipe!

Our first visit to Eco Paraiso was March 2001, our second exactly four years later. Our third... probably 2006. There is no better place to unwind, especially if you have only a week. The staff and management of the resort are wonderful. Alex, Miquel, Gaspar have been there virtually since the hotel opened. They take great pleasure in providing as much, or as little, attention as their guests demand.
If you don't want be pestered to play beach volley ball, get up on stage at night or do anything more than enjoy the sun, search the brush for Yucatan Jays or Pygmy Owls, then Eco Paraiso is the best vacation destination you'll ever find. We've done the inlet tour (twice) to see the flamingoes, gone fishing with a local fisherman, visited haciendas and Mayan ruins and never felt rushed or pressured to take part. Resident naturalist, Alex, is a pleasure to spend time with. His knowledge of the endemic species and their migration routes (he went to college in New Work State) is incredible. His concern for the habitat of Celestun is admirable.
We can't say enough positive things about the people of Eco Paraiso. From hotel owner Senora Gerber to the chamber maids to the taxi driver contracted to meet us at the Merida airport, everyone is intent of providing a peaceful, enjoyable and informative experience.
The next time we want to spend more time in Celestun, a quite fishing town where the fresh seafood meals served at the local restaurants is reported to be the best found anywhere. If we had to pick a beach to to spend the rest of our life on, Eco Paraiso and Celestun would be hard to ignore. Thank you to everyone at Paraiso... we'll see you again.

We came to Eco Paraiso to relax and to enjoy some solitude. The bird watching was so enjoyable that we did not spend much time lying around in the hammocks. The resort's setting is superb, the cabañas are private and comfy, and the staff are incredibly helpful. We took a trip with Alex Dzib, the staff nature guide and we were most impressed with his skills in the field. Not only did we see nearly all the endemic species, we also were treated to a vast array of other tropical species. Alex knows all the great birding spots and the important aspects of natural history and local history, too. Right down to where to get the best ceviche in town. Everyone associated with the resort was helpful and accommodating, even to the point of helping us to make reservations elsewhere in Mexico as we were leaving. We highly recommend Hotel Eco Paraiso as a great destination for a quiet getaway, or for some thoroughly engaging tropical bird watching. Thanks! We'll be back....

Liebe Frau Gerber Die zwei Tage in Celestun bleiben unvergesslich!! Vielen herzliche Dank! Karin und Bernhard

We spent two days of our Yucatan tour in Ecoparaiso Xixim and it was perhaps one of our most memorable times ever. The location was breathtaking, the staff helpful and simpatico, a superb & knowledgable guide in Alex, few other guests and great facilities. We hope to return and hope the long & rocky road to the hotel never gets paved over! The little natural history museum in reception is just one of the unusual touches. The fishing village of Celestun is well worth a long visit as well.

Eco Paraiso was the highlight of our Yucatan tour. The flamingos, the quiet but colourful town and harbour life, the beach shells, fox, raccoon and coati and lots more provided something for everyone. The staff were charming and the food excellent. For the specialist birder Alex puts on a spotlessly professional tour of local endemics and waterbird spectacles. If its there he will find it.

I Have visited ecoparaiso in the Yucatan getting in contac with the most amazing tour guide His name Alexander Dzib is really the most experienced bird guide in the Yucatan. I plan to bring my clients who are birders. Just in the grounds of the hotel they have several of the endemic species, as the Yucatan Wren, Yucatan Woodpecker, Yucatan Bobwhite, White-lored Gnatcatcher, and the Mexican Sheartail. If you're a birder don't miss Celestun nither Ecoparaiso. Take A bird tour with their guide Alex

A Turtle Experience 14th June 2003 Following a recommendation in a tourist guide, I decided to visit the town of Celestun on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. I had been attending a conference in Cancun and a Mexican friend had advised me to get out to the real Mexico as soon as possible and he suggested Merida. Mass tourism has not yet reached Celestun and hopefully never will, a diametrically opposite world to the decadence of American Cancun. I had read about an interesting sounding hotel Eco Paraiso Xixim (meaning Eco-Paradise Seashell) located some 10 km north of the town on the edge of the reserve. I asked to be left in Celestun and took a chance of there being a room available. Being off-season, there was no problem, albeit a bit pricey (unfortunately the hotel’s environmental program comes with a price) and I moved in to a beachfront cabin in traditional Mayan style. By luck a school class from Merida arrived soon after my arrival and was given a guided tour of the hotel. The hotel’s environmental approach with recycling of waste products was the main reason for this educational tour. I was lucky to be part of this tour and the manager translated everything into English for the benefit of myself and another British guest. We looked at the treatment of grey water and solids. Recycling of plastics, metals, paper etc. was also demonstrated to the school kids. However, it is unfortunate that no system is available locally to recycle and all are simply dumped in landfills. However, it is worthwhile to show this for educational purposes. It is planned to use the treated solids in a future organic garden to supply fresh produce to the kitchen. Unlike most hotels the grounds (located on the sand dunes) consist of local vegetation – a nice feature, but it would have been interesting to have had some notices up identifying some of the plants and their uses. Plants such as the Foetid Passionflower and Poreleaf (Porophyllum) and Ambrosia can be found here. On the tour of the hotel, we were offered a wild fruit commonly found around the hotel – Caimito Silvestre – a very tasty black fruit with a strange milky white juice. The birdlife around the hotel is extremely rich and the diminutive Hummingbirds were amazing. That evening, after a swim in the calm sea of the Gulf of Mexico and an excellent dinner, I decided to take a walk along the beach after dark on the off-chance that I might see turtles that reportedly might be seen on the beach. The manager kindly loaned me his head-torch. I didn’t have high expectations as I set off. The moon was full and the tide was low and I put up Nighthawks as I walked – I had never seen these birds before and their butterfly-like flight, with white “eyes” on the wings also resembling some enormous butterfly, is strange indeed for a European. After about 1 km I found what could have been Turtle tracks in the sand. However, I wasn’t sure and I dismissed the idea. After about an hour of walking I was about to turn back when I suddenly saw a large shadow further up on the high part of the beach which was moving. My initial reaction was that I thought it was a mammal of some kind, but a few paces futher on I came over the characteristic tracks of a turtle in the sand. I walked up the beach to the shadow and right enough, there was a turtle, beginning to excavate. It’s sheer size really impressed me initially. I had no idea they were so large. It was at least 50 cm long. I crouched down behind the Turtle and observed the animal as it excavated the hole for the eggs. The hole was perhaps 10-20cm across and 20-30 cm deep when fully excavated. The animal systematically dug the hole with its hind paddle-like limbs, gently lifiting the sand in the “palm” with one limb and depositing it on the side, then using the alternate limb to shove the sand to the side. Then it would do the same with the other limb and shovel to the side in an alternate fashion. The animal’s heavy breathing could be heard and it took frequent pauses, obviously a tiring business. After about half an hour the limbs could not reach any further down – however, the chamber was extended a bit lower down to make the chamber narrower at the top than at the bottom. It then proceeded to lay its eggs. Having no idea how many eggs a turtle could lay, I didn’t think to start counting initially. It layed 1-4 eggs rapidly together, then have a pause and then continue. I was amazed how many eggs there were and I estimate 40-50 altogether. The eggs seemed to be rather soft, allowing them to withstand the drop onto the other eggs. The eggs took longer and longer to lay towards the end and final effort just expelled an egg-white like liquid. The turtle, exhausted, then rested for some minutes before proceeding to cover the eggs. It did a thorough job in covering the eggs with as much sand as possible. Initially it used its hind limbs to cover the eggs, again alternating between limbs to cover the eggs. At one stage it also started to shove sand backwards using its front limbs, covering me with sand as I was crouched just behind the animal. It then proceeded alternately using front and back limbs to cover the eggs. The Nighthawks flew all around me throughout all this catching insects. Again the Turtle took frequent rests and by the end looked completely exhausted, eyes closed and head slumped on the sand. After resting for 5 minutes or so it hauled itself out of the hole and moved surprisingly quickly back down the beach to the water’s edge, stopping one or two times on its way. I waded in following the animal, but it quickly swam off as it entered the deeper water, now just a shadow and finally disappearing out into the Gulf of Mexico. Afterwards, I found another excavation on the Turtle’s trip up the beach to the final excavation. An amazing experience accentuated by the fact that I really hadn’t expected it. On my walk back along the beach, I found more tracks leading up from the water’s edge and, following them up the beach, I found yet another animal of the same species (consulting an identification guide back at the hotel, they turned out to be Loggerhead Turtles), at about the same stage as when I discovered the first Turtle. I returned to the hotel at about 1 a.m. The next day, it all seemed a bit like a dream.

Saludos

We just returned from Hotel Eco-Paraiso Xixim, where we spent three wonderful days on retreat with 17 church members. Several of us had stayed at the resort before and were eager to share the news of this hidden paradise with our friends. We were able to book the entire resort for our group (owner Verena Gerber was a most gracious host and accommodated our needs from our first inquiry). The rooms are artistically appointed, offering every amenity for our comfort and relaxation (including the intentional LACK of phone, TV, internet connection!!). If you are in paradise, what need do you have for those things? (If you really need to stay connected to the real world during your stay here, there is a comfy living room with television, videos to watch, and books to read.) Meals were delicious (not to mention the best guacamole and margaritas around!). Fresh drinking water is supplied by the hotel. Our tours to see the flamingos and to "hunt" for crocodiles were the highlights of our stay. Alex, their highly experienced naturalist, is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the bird species in the area. And if you want a real "Jungle Ride", be sure to take to the estuary at night to look for one of the many crocodiles that live in the mangroves. You'll speed over the shallow water dodging tree stumps and shrimpers looking for the reflection of a croc's "red eye", then zoom over the the edge of the mangroves to search closer. We had the great fortune to find a 4 meter long croc at the cenote (fresh water spring), where the day earlier, several of our party had taken a lovely dip in the cool waters! The resort offers a gorgeous swimming pool overlooking miles of pristine beach, lined with more shells than you will see in a lifetime. With just 15 cabañas, Hotel Eco-Paraiso Xixim is the prefect place to stay if you are looking for rest and renewal. It is an ideal place for individuals and also for small to medium sized groups wanting a beautiful and peaceful location for retreats or meetings. Flights are easy - Continental or Mexicana to Merida - Hotel Xixim will be glad to take care of your ground transportation. Business dealings with Verena Gerber and her manager Susana Zapata were seamless and open-book honest. The hotel pricing structure includes accomodation, meals, all non-alcoholic beverages, and tips for personnel. Activities include biking, kayaking, pool, ping-pong, and swinging in the hammock on the front porch of your cabaña. Other side trips that can be arranged include a visit to the old Spanish haciendas or to Mayan ruins. There just aren't too many places like this left in the world. Hotel Xixim is just like a photo in a travel magazine - you know, the one that pulls you into it, makes you forget where you are for a moment. Go now before it changes. And when you come back, tell your friends!

Can I just tell you how magical this place was for us? My girlfriend and I visited EcoParaiso over Christmas 2001, and it’s a trip we’ll never forget. As a senior executive at a major US telecommunications company, 2001 had been a tremendously trying year for me. I had been ground into dust as an employee, and my spirit was practically broken. Time and again, through the summer, fall and early winter, our company was rocked by the collapse of the marketplace. Each night, I took that stress home. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating right. And my health was deteriorating from the pressure. My new girlfriend suggested a non-traditional Christmas; rather than dealing with the additional pressures that come with a family holiday gathering, how about finding the most stress-free environment in the hemisphere? It was a great idea, and after a broad search we decided upon EcoParaiso. The trip to the resort was not as simple as popping over to Las Vegas, but it wasn’t much of a challenge either. Over an hour in the car – generously provided by the resort – and we were in the middle of nowhere. As we bumped and wound deeper into the nature preserve, we looked at each other in great anticipation – this really was “out there”! The staff was hugely helpful checking and settling us in, and we took the furthest cabana from the main hall. Laying in the comfortable and convenient palapa that night, I could hear the ocean crash onto the sand… over… and over… and over… Literally, for the entire week, unless we wanted to see people we wouldn’t have at all (except the maids, who were almost invisible!). In fact, for about a day and a half we just hung out in our hammocks, entertained ourselves in our cabana, and snuck out for an evening walk on the beach. On the days when we didn’t mind company, we found plenty – the side trips are very interesting, and the enviro-guide (Alex?) was about as smart as they come. The food wasn’t five-star, but it was delicious nonetheless and the dining room staff made a point of remembering preferences. And the managers were flat-out incredible hosts. And, boy, did we ever fall deeply and madly and magically in love. One day, at nightfall, we went to the beach to watch the sunset. I can’t truly explain how absolutely gorgeous it was, but there was something afoot on the Yucatan that night. The wind was carrying clouds east at about 5,000 feet, west at about 10,000 feet, and south at 20,000 feet. And the sun, it whispered quietly as it disappeared into the sea… a stunning sight that we’ll probably never repeat in our lives. I had to look away, in fear that the beauty would just overtake me. Today, that vacation is six months and a lifetime away. My company is holding steady but the market hasn’t improved. The stress builds, 18 hours every day after day after day. But several times daily, I look at the framed photo of my beach hat, blowing in the wind as it hung from my crooked walking stick, which I had driven into the sand next to the place where we sat on the beach and enjoyed… PARADISE. Thank you EcoParaiso. We’ll return. Please save our palapa for us; I just checked the market again and it looks like we’ll need it!

Together with another couple we spent five days/four nights (March 9-13, 2002) in your lovely Xixim resort. We had an unforgettable time in this pristine part of the world. The cottages we stayed in were very attractive and the service of the staff was A-1. We took three excursions to the Celestun Reserve and admired the beautiful nature, the bright orange flamingos, the great number of other birds and during our night trip, the crocodilies. Your guide, Alejandro Zib was superb. Not only is this young man extremely knowledgable but in addition he was just great company. We believe that to really see the bird life well , one has to start at the hotel not later than 6 am which we fortunately did. The estuary at that time is just mind buggling and so is the fauna. We also made very long walks on the extensive beach . All in all its was a great experience which we enjoyed to the fullest. Hopefully this beautiful setting will be preserved for ever. The Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics, one of the Royal Swedish Academy's research institutes, held a research seminar at the Hotel Eco Paraiso in December 2001. The participants were scholars who came from a number of different Latin American countries, and the faculty consisted of Professor Kenneth Arrow, Stanford University, Professor Partha Dasgupta, Cambridge University, Professor Charles Perrings, York University and Professor Karl-Goran Maler from The Beijer Institute. We were all very happy and pleased with our stay at the Eco Paraiso. The hotel is perfect for a small workshop/conference if you want to get away from the rest of the world for a while. We were lucky to have the whole resort to ourselves and we were able to concentrate on our work but also enjoy the beautiful surroundings! The management and staff of the hotel were very helpful and efficient and satisfied all our needs. We can warmly recommend this place to others who are looking for a place to hold a meeting or spend their holiday!

He recorrido muchos paises gracias a mi trabajo. Claudio Tombari. Paris. My husband and I rented a house in Celestun for two weeks in June of 2000 for our honeymoon. While in Celestun we came to Eco Paraiso almost daily and fell in love with it's romance, ambiance, and natural beauty. We dined in the restaurant, my husband is a chef, and have never had such fantastic food in a foreign country. We rented the kayaks one day and the staff was so kind to us as we weren't staying at the hotel, to make us a deal of the kayaks and a special crab dinner when we returned. We swam in the gorgeous swimming pool and took pictures under the waterfall. Friends joined us after our first week and we immediately sent them to Eco Paraiso for dinner. Since we left we have been planning another trip and this time we will stay at Eco Paraiso. The staff and the grounds are so unbelievable and the experiences of Celestun, Merida, and the Yucatan were nothing short of spectacular. For those more interested in spending their vacations outside of the hustle and bustle of typical tourist resorts and cities, Eco Paraiso and Celestun are the top choice we've found! Thank you for a honeymoon we will always remember ! Sara and Todd Riemersma
